History of Deaf Yoga?

Yoga started around 5,000 years ago in India, before many other religions. Yoga was developed between a yoga master and a student to heal the self by developing and stilling the mind.

Do we have any information on the history of Deaf people practicing yoga, deaf mudra (meditative hand gestures/shapes) or deaf Gurus?

There is a sacred dance in India called the Baratanatyam that tells a story with hand gestures and hand shapes. For an example of this dance, click on this YouTube video

There is a pose called Karnapidasana, "deaf man's pose". See this link for more information about this pose.

Lila Lolling, a dedicated hearing yoga teacher, established DeafYoga Foundation in USA to raise funds to do more research to study the deaf yoga signs in India. Please contact Karli if you have any information on Deaf yoga history.

Now there is an increasing number of Deaf dedicated yoga teachers qualified to teach in Australia and overseas. Contact Karli for details.
