ABOUT  LATOWN

Latown is the name of our dance group, it is not a place so you won't find it on any map.

We've been dancing in the Lalor - Thomastown area of Melbourne, Vic, Aust, since 1986, hence the name combines both suburban names.

We started out with 20 people interested in social ballroom dancing and in the intervening years, have outgrown four halls, but we're still dancing and having fun.

We do sequence ballroom dancing which is simply a set routine of steps or figures mostly over sixteen bars of music, just like the Charmaine, Tangoette, Carousel etc. This routine is danced several times for the length of the music played.

Our dance styles take in Slow Foxtrot, Saunter, Blues, Quickstep, Swing, Jive, Modern Waltz, Nu Vogue (Aussie) Waltz, Tango, Rumba , Samba, Cha Cha, Mambo, Salsa and that's about it in a nutshell.

Most dances we do originate in England, the home of ballroom dance but there are a few like of the older  Aussie creations such as the Barclay Blues, Jacober Blues, Gaiety Waltz and some of the newer Aussies like the Waltz Inamorata, Rumba Azure, Topaz Waltz and the Presentation Waltz.
