Authors: Caroline de Costa and Michele Moore Publisher: Allen & Unwin "How can someone write 200 pages about the penis?" My good friend asked when I told her of this review. To which I replied, "Most of the great literature in our world has been centred on, around or avoiding the penis, no?" We nodded sagely and she asked, "So, are there pictures?" And yes, there are. Diagrams, quite specific and helpful, and even one to show the difference between cut and uncut. Though if you need a diagram... Written by two doctors who obviously felt there wasn't a decent book around on the subject at hand (badda-boom), Dick is 22 chapters of penile analysis and explanation, plus a small dictionary of slang to round things off. Or up. Written in an informal yet educative tome, it explores all there is to know about how those funny bits and pieces we're all so fond of work, and what happens when they don't. They use case studies to illustrate their point (stop it) and pepper the text with enough jokes and puns to make one chortle. As a manual trying to appeal to the broadest section of the population, there's an obvious hetero predominance, probably unavoidable but nevertheless notable and the chapter on infertility wasn't particularly of interest. However as a reference text that young and old can consult when their willies go a little wonka, it's clear, direct and an unembarrassing place to begin one's journey into the contemporary cockucopia of rump splitters and tail pipes. |
