ABOUT
LAURENCE TURTLE
Laurence Turtle is married with three
adult sons and is passionate about family history. He is also very
interested in how family histories tie in with the wider historical
context. He owes a great debt to his grandmother, Florence Turtle, who
made history fascinating and real as a young child. She told wonderful
stories about the family and kept a wealth of memorabilia.
As a First Fleeter, Laurence has
traced his roots within Australia back to the very earliest days of
white settlement. His great great great great grandmother was Ann
Colpitts who arrived in New South Wales in 1788. She was one of the
first to give birth in the new colony as she had a baby on the voyage
out from England.
Ann Colpitts' life was most colourful
and Laurence has written a thesis on Ann and her ancestors which is
available at the Australian Genealogical Society in Sydney. This
family now runs to its ninth generation in Australia.
Laurence holds a Bachelor of Arts
Degree and Dip Ed (Sydney University) with a major in history and has been a
teacher "in another life". As well, he is a qualified
genealogist who has completed the Diploma in Family Historical Studies
and the New South Wales Archives course. He has also done
detailed research on orphanage records in New South Wales between 1814
and 1847: the period of the boys and girls orphan schools in Sydney.
In his spare time Laurence loves to
spend time with his family, to continue tracing his own family tree, to
garden or to listen to most types of music.
He also loves meeting people with a
similar passion for family history as he believes family history fills
in the complete fabric of Australian history and tells the stories of
many "ordinary" people who have made this country such a
great place to live.
