Here we stand again with an opportunity to make a real difference for ourselves, and future generations.
Recently I was speaking to a father of a three-year-old and he asked me, “What am I going to tell her, if we do not fix the environment?” Our conversation finished with the two of us agreeing that bad things happen when good people do nothing.
So here I am again. My name is Michelle Drummond and I am standing as an Independent in the Senate South Australia. My platform is Social, Environmental and Economic Justice.
I continue to be committed to the protection of the environment, and finding innovative ways for us to live in a more just and sustainable way. I am passionate about reducing poverty and homelessness. I believe the current industrial relation laws leave many individuals vulnerable in the workplace with little opportunity for challenging unfair dismissal claims. Added to this, we are being expected to increase our retirement age, while at the same time welfare is being eroded. Welfare management is not only having a negative impact on many Aboriginal communities, it is now being systematically introduced into other communities around Australia, as highlighted in the Advertiser on 28 June 2010. Ironically this is happening while parliamentarians are expecting a pay increase of potentially $50,000 per year.
We have much work to do. The issues with the Murray have not been solved, our storm water still flows out to sea, we need to improve energy efficiency, and provide our power from clean, safe renewable energy. I am opposed to nuclear power.
