A Short History of the Fitchburg Steam Engine Company.

The sketches below are taken from the Book -
" New Catechism of The Steam Engine " by N. Hawkins, M. E. [ Last Published 1904 ]
Publisher : THEO. AUDEL & Co - New York - NY.

Seen below are just a few of the Fitchburg Engines being to numerous to show them
all due to the vast amount of different models having been manufactured over many
years. These early engines were rated between 2 Horse-Power to 300 Horse-Power
and were available in Vertical or Horizontal types. Smaller models were manufactured
combined with a boiler and were of a Semi-Portable design intended for marine use.

Above is a 1903 Fitchburg Girder Frame Horizontal mill engine with new running gear, namely
the wrist plate and valves., adding more precise timing with less stroke for the valves to travel
and halving their weight compared to all of the earlier models, also giving a nice refinement to
what was already a good design.

The sketch above shows one of the high speed " Chief " engine models of which there were
many, first manufactured around about ( 1883 ) this small engine could be put to many uses.

Manufactured in ( 1879 ) the Compound Steeple engine with manual
governor " left flywheel " was built for Heavy Industry requirements
It served the Company for many years as a brilliant top end machine.
Due to the large size flywheel - it could be used in a coasting manner
for many uses and when power was really required the governor could
be manually adjusted to gain more power from the engine dependent
upon the power requirement's for a given purpose.
