Migrant & Refugee Sunday
31 August 2008

As mentioned last week, the Catholic Bishops of Australia have designated this Sunday as Migrant and Refugee Sunday. I am often amazed when I reflect on how multicultural our parish is. A glance at the faces and a listening ear will reveal that we came from every nook and cranny of the globe: Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Europe, Eastern Europe, the Sub-Continent, the Middle East, Polynesia, Micronesia, the Pacific Islands and of course, Australia. To list the actual countries would take far too much space, and lists are not the focus anyway. It is the chance for us to reflect on how truly blessed we are to be part of such a diverse group of people.

As a parish, we are in the prime position to show others how to live in peace with one’s neighbour, regardless of where he or she comes from; that it is possible for people to reach out to others in friendship; that the differences of colour and language are superficial. Jesus often crossed the social divide and reached out to others. The question is: are you up to the challenge? Are you willing to say “hello” and make others feel welcome and wanted?

Try it this weekend. At Mass today, turn to someone you have never spoken to before and introduce yourself. If you don’t know what to say, just tell them your name and where you are from. Then, next time you see them, just say “hi.” Imagine if each of us did this once a week – oh how our parish would grow and become even more Christ-like!
