Heavenly
Father, I thank-you for the gifts with which my life abounds: the
people, the circumstances, the events. They are signs of Your faithful
love. I thank-you, too, for the difficult things that I do not
recognize as gifts, for I believe that, through all things, You are
leading me more deeply into Your life and will.

Prayer for Rain
|
FATHER IN HEAVEN, we know
that You love us, care for us and provide for us. We know that we in
Australia are singularly blessed by You in many ways. Yet we come to
You to ask that You look mercifully on us in our present time of need. We
have not always come back to say "Thanks". Many in the world are so
much poorer and in need of Your help and love than we, nevertheless we ask
You to provide sufficient rain to our country, to teach us to appreciate
what we have and to help us show our gratitude by our generosity to all
who are in need.

Sudan Appeal
On 9 January 2011 the people of
southern Sudan voted to determine their nation’s future. With your prayers of
support, the overwhelming vote for independence conducted and received without
violent dispute.
In the six months of Transition, the tensions of a 4
decade civil war have re-emerged in communities of northern and southern Sudan:
conflict, displacement and entrenched poverty continue to obscure the path to
peace and justice for Sudan.
In response to the ongoing humanitarian need
in Sudan, Caritas Australia is supporting local partners to deliver emergency
aid; food and water security programs; livelihoods opportunities; access to
health, sanitation and education; and peace-building initiatives.
You can
support the people of Sudan by donating to Caritas Australia’s Sudan Emergency
Appeal. Your compassion will support emergency preparedness initiatives, as well
as ongoing humanitarian and rehabilitation projects in the most vulnerable
communities of southern Sudan. To pledge your support click here.

Sacrament of
Reconciliation |
|
One of the most
healing things that can happen to us in our lives is the experience of
being forgiven. It does not mean that the past is forgotten or that the
wrong we have done no longer matters. Our past sins are all part of the
tapestry of who we are, but forgiveness makes it possible for us to weave
them all into this tapestry without fear, so that we can be at peace again
with ourselves, our fellow men and women, and our God. That is the meaning
of reconciliation. Not just the words "I forgive you", but the deep down
assurance that we are still loved despite what has happened.
The
need to be forgiven and freed from guilt is a basic human need. That is
why it is so important to be aware of God¡¯s attitude to those who have
sinned, and to realise that the way back to God is always open.
Sometimes we can get nervous about confessing our sins in the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. We find ourselves confessing the same old
sins as usual and so wonder if Christ is as bored with our list of
failures as we are. We¡¯re rather like the small boy who, told by his
mother to say his night prayers, rather grumpily knelt down by the bed and
said, "Dear God, same things as last night. Amen."The trouble is we
concentrate too much on the confessing of our sins, too much concerned
with what we have to say. And that is the mistake. There are two people in
every celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation ?the penitent and
Jesus, who is present in the priest. The most important words are not what
we say but the words of welcome and forgiveness which come from Jesus
himself. The Sacrament of Penance is primarily an experience of prayer and
worship. One of the best loved prayers within the Eastern tradition of
Christianity is called the "Jesus Prayer". It is said over and over again,
something like the Hail Mary when we recite the Rosary. The Jesus Prayer
is: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a
sinner.

Seafarers’ Sunday
10 July 2010
This weekend is Seafarers¡¯ Sunday. The
focus this year is on Piracy. Seafarers have always suffered at the hands
of pirates, but piracy has grown to such an alarming level that some
professional seafarers will no longer go to sea. As many of these
seafarers come from the third world, they are choosing extreme poverty
over the chance of a sustainable income. Alternatively, those who do sign
up are fearful for their lives. The damage and impact on the families of
seafarers will be felt for years.
Piracy is a criminal act. Today,
over 800 seafarers are being held for ransom as hostages. They are subject
to physical and psychological abuse for up to eight months and some even
lose their lives.
Piracy affects each and every one of us. Piracy
is beginning to strangle key supply routes. Over 90% of the world¡¯s food,
fuel, raw materials and manufactured goods is delivered by sea. World
trade is under threat, with piracy costing the global economy 7-12 billion
dollars a year. But the world¡¯s politicians do not seem to realise the
severity of the crisis.
You can help stop this hostage-taking and
help restore the freedom of the seas. Please add your voice to a worldwide
call for government action. More robust laws, stronger enforcement of
international conventions and firmer political resolve are needed to stop
these pirates. Please click here to visit the Seafarers website and with a couple of
clicks you can send an SOS (save our seafarers) letter directly to our
government.
The Apostleship of the Sea organisation (Stella Maris)
is working to bring about better security for shipping and changes in
government policy. It works with seafarers who have suffered at the hands
of pirates and finds ways to help them and their families during and after
these attacks. Please keep seafarers and the work of Stella Maris in your
prayers. |
