Historic racing cars
1935 Ford Special
Febuary 2004, Jim Russell in the red 1935 Ford Special 4400 cc. A few years ago this car was silver and looked a bit like an upturned bathtub. (Group K)
This was the last meeting I attended where you could get this close at the Southern Loop. Since winter 04 the tyre barrier and spectator fence have been pushed back a long way. It may be safer for modern racing but it has ruined the sense of proximity during the historics.
1934 Miller four wheel drive
March 2003, Phillip Island Classic Motor Races. Dean Butler in the 255ci four wheel drive Miller. One of only 2 built and first raced at Indianapolis in 1934.
1951 Maserati A6 GCM #2033
Inside the cockpit
of the 2.0L Maserati. Note the 'nad crushing gear lever between the
legs. Unfortunately it didn't make it onto the track on the Sunday 24th
Feb, 2002 at Phillip Island. Several other Maseratis were raced on the
day including an 8CM and a 26M.
1935 Alfa Tipo C 8C/35 #50013
Giddings returns with the Alfa in March 2003.
Here being driven by Californian owner, Peter
Giddings, around the Southern Loop at Phillip Island, 1/3/98. More info
on this car (once raced by the great Nuvolari) can be found on the
Corsa Rossa site. If Giddings is going to race one of Nuvolari's
cars I think he should wear the yellow shirt for authenticity.
Giddings is a regular visitor to Australian historic racing, bringing with him all sorts of exotic machinery, including the ex Whitney Straight Maserati 8CM and a Maserati 250F.
Sports cars
E-Type Jag 4.2L

Here driven by Doug Henderson, rounding MG at Phillip Island, March 1994.
Touring cars
1967 Toyota Corolla
A 1967 Toyota Corolla being driven by Adam John of NSW, Feb 2001. Toyota Coronas were first raced in Australia in 1965 at Bathurst in the 500 mile race for production touring cars. Even back then they refused to break down. In 1968 a Corolla won class A (the cheapest class). Being a Toyota driver myself, I couldn't resist including this shot.
Ford Mustang
John Mann in his historic group Nc Mustang followed by Cam Worner in
a 351 GT Falcon, Phillip Island, Feb 2002.
Listen to the sound file of these cars in mp3 format, 68kB 12 seconds duration.
Volkswagen Beetle
Thomas Law in the 1963 Volkswagen, Feb 2004. Larger view. This car possibly pays homage to the 1963 Bathurst Class A winner, the Ferguson/Ford VW entry that narrowly beat the Mini 850 home after 500 miles.
Torana A9X 1979
Paul Stubber in the ex John Harvey Torana A9X leads Chris Hinton in the ex Bob Morris Torana during Group C qualifying, Siberia, Phillip Is, Saturday, Feb 26, 2005. Larger view. I remember watching these cars on TV in the late 1970s when I first became interested in motorsport. A video clip of the number 76 car can be found on my motorsport video page.
Boss Mustang 1968
Michael Micelli in the 302 cubic inch Boss Mustang coming out of MG turn, Phillip Is, Saturday, Feb 26, 2005. Larger view.
