COMMUNITY BROADCASTING STATIONS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Waringarri Radio

Waringarri Radio 6WR - "the Aboriginal Voice of the North-East Kimberley" - is a community radio station broadcasting full time from purpose-built studios located on the northern edge of Kununurra.

Transmitting on 5kW, Waringarri's coverage extends over 300 kilometres, from Timber Creek in the Northern Territory, to the Argyle Diamond Mine in WA's south and El Questro in the west.

The station has an indigenous focus and serves over 30 outback communities. Not only does it provide regular entertainment and educational programs - oral histories, news and current affairs - it also plays a vital communications role during the Wet Season when Kimberley regions can be isolated by floods.

Waringarri Radio is the only local radio station broadcasting to the Kununurra area. The station, which contributes to PAKAM (Pilbara and Kimberley Aboriginal Media Network), is operated by both paid and voluntary staff members.

For more information, email Waringarri Radio at radio6wr@westnet.com.au, or visit their website at waringarriradio.com.au.
