THE WEST AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY BROADCASTING EXPERIENCE

What is WACBA?

The Western Australian Community Broadcasting Association (WACBA) is the peak body for community broadcasting in WA. Its role is to develop and promote the sector throughout Western Australia's regional, remote and metropolitan areas.

WACBA's major projects in 2003 include:

  • developing a comprehensive Strategic Plan in consultation with the entire sector thanks to funding supplied by the Lotteries Commission of WA;
  • instigating a state-based sponsorship sales program for our member stations;
  • hosting a West Australian community broadcasting seminar for both regional and metropolitan participants using partner-funding provided by Lotteries and the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF);
  • a major expansion of the WACBA website through a grant supplied by the CBF's CBOnline Fund so we can offer information, advice and services to help develop and support the West Australian sector even further.

WORKING TOGETHER

When WACBA was formed in 1986, only two community radio stations existed in Western Australia, both of them in Perth.

Today, WA has more than 23 licensed community radio stations, one community television station, and a number of active aspirant groups spread all over the state. About half the licensed stations are located in regional WA.

It is unlikely that this expansion would have been possible without WACBA.

Over the years, WACBA has supported a wide variety of groups who wanted to start their own community stations.

We have disseminated information kits and newsletters, delivered presentations and provided encouragement.

We have hosted conferences and training workshops, lobbied government and issued press releases to keep WA community broadcasting on the agenda.

We have represented the West Australian community broadcasting sector at national level.

And, on a continual basis, we facilitate valuable networking between WA’s community stations and groups.

If you've not already done so, visit "The WA Experience: At-A-Glance" for specific details of WACBA's activities and achievements over the years.

WACBA'S MEMBERS

WACBA's members over the years have included fully licenced community broadcasting stations in Perth and regional Western Australia, as well as stations operating on Temporary Community Broadcasting Licences (TCBLs) and other aspirant groups still at the planning stage.

We also have various members who fall into the "Supporter" category.

If you think that you, your station or group may qualify for WACBA membership, please feel free to contact us for more details.
