The concept of a Lego Christmas came when we returned to Geelong after living in Tassie for 3 years. All our rellies gave us Lego presents because they knew that would be a winner with us. We got a police station and a fire station, which were both bigger sets than we'd ever had. Now we had a town! Of course the next Christmas we wanted more. And we got it. But we needed to curtail the greed somewhat so from 1981 we began the tradition of giving the girls only Lego every second Christmas. In August of the Lego Christmas years, the girls looked through the catalogue and put their initials next to the things they wanted. Santa usually delivered one small item like a vehicle, and one middle-sized set for each girl. Pieter got train tracks or a level crossing. After about ten years we had a collection of mostly smaller buildings, and Lego was bringing out huge sets like the harbour and airport. Then we changed our choosing technique and as a family discussed our wishes. At Christmas we all put our hands on the one big package of Lego and ripped off the wrapping to reveal many boxes of varying sizes. There was always a big set that took our breath away and made an impressive addition to our Lego Town.
