For over 20 years our Lego town had been growing gradually. We grew along with it and became quite oblivious to the large collection we were accruing . In January, 2000, a family friend who worked at the local paper was impressed with our town and encouraged his colleagues to come along and have a look. The next day, our family hobby was featured on the front page of the Geelong Advertiser, including a large photo and the headline "Lego Crazy Family Lives for Tiny World". A Channel 7 reporter spied the story and organised his cameraman to come down and do a story on our obsession for the 6 o'clock news. This was an eye-opening experience for the family, who enjoyed watching how news' stories were made. Our one minute Lego news 'item' also made the national late news, and popped over the Tasman to New Zealand news as well. The story then travelled to the UK via word of mouth. A keen BBC reporter from the children's news program 'Newsround' organised to 'pop' over and do a story of her own. It had been just announced that 'Lego' had been awarded 'Toy of the Century'. The Geelong Advertiser returned while the BBC were filming, to do a follow-up story of the media interest that had followed their initial story. The family packed up the collection before anyone else could come along. We thought that we had seen the end of media attention. Not so. Two and a half years later, our collection was making an unprecedented June appearance. Melbourne's most popular newspaper, the Herald Sun, featured our collection in the Kid's Stuff section of the Sunday paper. In both cases we were thanked for our efforts with the most appropriate gift of all - more Lego.
