House Keeping

Those who know me may be hesitant to take advice from me about house keeping.  Believe me, I have found every type of organisational tool there is out there.  Hope some of these help!

Home made cleaning products save your health and your hip pocket!

Freecycle is a world wide set up where people give things away for free.

Op Shops a great place to shop for clothes, furniture, wool, knitting needles, crochet hooks, sewing patterns (check all the pieces are there) and much more.

Mending clothes, toys and shoes seems to have gone by the wayside.  My father is a garbage collector and is constantly bringing home items which are fine except some small thing that needed to be mended.  I don't follow fashion, I feel it's frivolous.  I try to dress neatly and conservatively in classic designs.  Multi-purpose, mix and match items such as sneakers (runners), pairs of jeans, t-shirts, jumpers, jackets etc make up my wardrobe and unless something is beyond repair or badly stained I still wear it sometime.  Maybe for gardening or just around the house on a low-energy day.  If something is beyond repair or badly stained I look at the piece to see if any part of the material can be salvaged to be used in craft projects or make smaller items for my children or children's toys.  See this list for a basic wardrobe.

Hand-me-downs are great money savers!  Friends with children similar in age can swap clothes back and forth to cloth children for years.  When my children were small almost all of their clothes were hand-me-downs.  Now it's a little different as they are at that age where every piece of clothing seems to get destroyed.  But I'm sure we'll get through this stage (just like all the other stages)

Basic food is amazingly cheap.  You need to have a few staple recipes and keep those items in your pantry.  I make ANZAC biscuits regularly for my children (and husband!!!) because they are cheap, easy and nutritious.  Making food "from scratch" also allows you to avoid those nasty food additives.

"Old Fashioned" fun is being taken over by the electronic invasion.  Apart from the information overload being fired off at us from every angle we have the "your life will not be complete if you don't have the latest and greatest product" (which will be out of date tomorrow and you'll have to buy something else).  Here is a list of what my children played with most when they were 5 and 7.

Cardboard boxes from when their Nanna moved are constantly being turned into cubby's in conjunction with chairs, blankets and of course the dog!

Bicycles and scooters are being ridden nearly every day it doesn't rain.

Books are read every evening before bed.  We are regular library users.

Dolls are played with most days.  I admit there are Barbies and Bratz but there are also baby dolls and a rag doll I helped my oldest to sew.

Board Games and jigsaw puzzles are still good fun.  Which some games are just money makers other classics such as chess, backgammon, trouble (aka Agitation), snakes and ladders (make your own on a large sheet of cardboard and use bottle tops as counters) and of course cards.  Teach your children common courtesy and manners (to take turns, use appropriate language please, thank you, your turn etc) AND that fun doesn't have to have a plug!

You'll be frugal and wise if you don't buy everything they say you need
