George Butrumlis

 

George Butrumlis has played the piano accordion since the age of six. He was an original member of Jo Camilleri’s band, Black Sorrows, and his accordion is featured on the first five Black Sorrows albums. George has worked and recorded with a diverse group of artists such as Men At Work, Ross Wilson, Archie Roach, Jane Clifton, Ted Egan, Jeannie Lewis, The Backsliders, The Borderers, The Three Tenors, Bob Geldof, Melbourne Symphony and Adelaide Chamber orchestras, and has performed on countless Australian film and television soundtracks for Peter Best, Paul Grabowsky and Cesary Skubiscewski. He recently performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for Pavarotti’s farewell concert tour and has also featured in many theatre productions including Lennon: The Musical of the Legend and the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of the story of Edith Piaf starring Caroline O’Connor. George’s band, Zydeco Jump, has been a regular feature on the Australian music scene for over 15 years and has appeared at most major Australian music festivals. Zydeco Jump has toured in China and will play at Live En Aout and the Giant Omelette Festival in Noumea. George travels regularly to Austria and Vienna, where he has played with a wide range of avant garde, jazz and improvising musicians. He recently spent time in Italy as recipient of a grant from the Australia Council for the Arts to study accordion manufacture, tuning and repair. Over the past few years George has performed regularly with Kristina Olsen and Perth cellist, Peter Grayling. George has also specialised in the music of the tango, having been a member of Doug De Vries’s New Tango Quintet. He has played tango with Jex Saarelaht, Phillip Rex, Anita Hustas and David Osborne. During 2005 George was also a featured artist at the National Gallery of Victoria during the Impressionist exhibition and the Dutch Masters.
