Caerwen Martin

Caerwen Martin has been playing music — cello, oboe, voice, violin, piano and percussion — for most of her life. She studied oboe in Perth with Joel Marangella, Germany at the Bielefeld Conservatorium and London with Graham Salter, Principal oboist of Convent Garden Opera. She holds a Masters (MusPerf) in cello from the Victorian College of the Arts (big thanks to the Sir John T Reid Bursary Fund). Caerwen also studied cello in Perth with Lewis Tomlin and in Croatia with Professor Valter Despalj, who convinced her that she ‘really was a musician and not just a try hard wannabe’. Other words of encouragement came from Usi Weizel, a cellist and teacher from Jerusalem: ‘All he said was, "you’ll do well" but it meant a lot to me at the time’.
She has worked with Fiona Burnett, John Butler, David Young, Kane Alexander, Elena Katschernin, Dan Brodie and the Broken Arrows, Kate Neal, David Chesworth, Dr Tony Gould, Naked Raven, Paradise Motel, Moody’s Brood, Sophie Koh, Aphids, Emaline Delapaix, Comfortable, Mark Eden and once jammed till the early hours with Nigel Kennedy. Caerwen’s other love is composition. She writes music for live ensembles, theatre, dance, opera and film (Artesian, Lost and Found, Reception). ‘In my composition I generally try to extract material from the environment I’m in at the time. I like to alter environments and manipulate recorded sounds. I’d like to create amazing music that makes you feel.’ She is currently playing contemporary music, acting a bit and taking photos for bands.
