Kieren Ray studied classical and jazz guitar at Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium of Music. In 1997 he travelled to Spain to focus on an intensive study of flamenco guitar. Since 1990, Kieren has performed professionally as a soloist and in numerous ensembles playing flamenco, classical and jazz guitar. He has performed extensively throughout Australia at major festivals and venues, and has recorded and featured in live broadcasts for ABC and SBS local and national radio and various television stations. In 1994, Kieren began collaborating with dancer Nella Randone. This association has inspired a substantial collection of flamenco dance theatre productions featuring original choreographies and compositions. Musical excerpts from their production, Triptych, (2002–2003) were featured in the film Memory Tree: The Controversial Art of David Boyd (Juniper Films, 2004). Kieren has performed and recorded with Australia’s most prominent flamenco guitarists, dancers and singers. He currently works with Melbourne groups Sonikete and Arte Kanela, as well as his own group ContraBanda, which performs original works and contemporary masterpieces. Kieren is also a guitarist/composer for the national Australian flamenco dance and music company, Flamenco Fire. He also continues to collaborate with artists and ensembles within a variety of musical contexts.
