Mishka is our
nine year old Keeshond, dob 30/01/94, (pronounced
'Kays-hond' although often mispronounced as 'Kees-hound' and even 'Quiche-hound').
She is a member of the Spitz family, which includes Pomeranians at 2kg, to Japanese and German Spitz, Samoyeds, Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes at 60Kg.
Until the early 1900's, Keeshonds (the plural is really Keeshonden) were more commonly known as Dutch Barge Dogs as they originated from Europe's Rhine River region.
Keeshonds are characterized by a thick profuse coat and tail that they carry on their back in typical spitz fashion. They require weekly grooming but not trimming.
They are a medium size breed, quite robust with no particular health worries and grow to a height of 450mm (18") measured at the shoulder and weigh 16-19 Kg (35-42 lbs).
Keeshonds are very alert, bold and intelligent and make excellent watchdogs (not to be confused with an aggressive guard dog).
Because they are very intelligent and so willing to please, they are easy to train and ideal for obedience work. |
They
were never bred to hunt, fight or kill, they are simply a very affectionate companion dog.
Whilst they are not aggressive towards people or other dogs, neither are they timid or shy.
Probably their most endearing feature is their personality, characterized a sweet temperament and because they lack a 'doggy' smell, even when wet, they are ideal indoors.
What sort of kennel should you get for them ?
the same one you live in will be fine.
What type of bed ?
same answer, yours will be just fine.
And Mishka loves cars, caravans and holidays.
The only thing she likes more than seeing you get her seat-belt harness, is you arriving home or her dinner bowl being filled.
If you wish to be owned by a Keeshond or any breed for that matter, I hope you will read . . .
