Clearway: STAIRWELL VIDEO INSTALLATION
1. Magpies 2. spider (daddy Long Legs) 3. Horses 4. Hitler VIDEOS : aprox. 3mins. on loop
This work is part of an ongoing/developing series of works/Installations that began in 2003 at Occular Lab, Melb. The project is a video Installation exploring the tenuous relationship between natural and technological worlds. On this occasion I am working with common characters from the 'natural' world and historical archive of human behavior.
spider video (516k)
magpie video (448k)
horses (608k)
The project unites imagery from the 'natural' world with historical footage within a technological framework/ structure. These works are sculptural in that they are physically adapted objects that spatially relate to objects in a prescribed space. Common animals appearing in common environments are presented alongside manipulated archival footage of human behavior at its worst (Hitler) to present a platform for discussion on the notion of Darwins theories of 'natural selection, and survival of the fittest in a world seemingly more fragile than ever before. The work is then mixed with a soundtrack that hopes to create a tension or unease, reflecting the current world political climate.
In a sense this work is a construction of a 'natural' world, or in actuality a 'non natural' world. Either way, the constructed environment is a place for speculation, a space for a critique on relationships within natural worlds; human, animal and land relationships and also human and history relationships. History as a defining characteristic of being human.
