Mildura Arts Centre is presenting the fourth in an ongoing series of collaborative installations by Peter Johnstone, Sean Loughrey and Rod Spinks. This exhibition introduces the audience to an unofficial Australian icon, an organism generally viewed in a negative light - the common blowfly. Taking the format of an installation, the exhibition will incorporate visual images, text and living flies, combining elements of the sublime and the macabre. The audience will be confronted by a visual interplay between the artificial and the actual, drawing attention to our preconceptions of a "natural" world. It will also question the form in which an artwork should take and what constitutes the pronouncement of what is art. Each presentation of DIPTERA is an individual configuration, yet all exhibitions within the series share an underlying exploration of specific ideas. The explored ideas and individual constraints of the gallery space become integral components of the visual outcome. DIPTERA was first exhibited in 1993, as an associated project within the Fifth Australian Sculpture Triennial at the Museum of Victoria. It has since been exhibited at the Southgate promenade, during the Melbourne Festival and at the Warrnambool Art Gallery in 1995. |
