The house with chicken legs is a beautiful book written by Sophie Anderson. It is about a girl called Marinka and her grandmother whom she calls ‘baba’. Her baba is a Yaga; a person who guides the dead into their afterlife. All Marinka wants is a real friend, unlike all the dead. Her baba has always told her that dead can be fun to play with. But Marinka knows that the dead are not fun and they leave through the darkness of the ‘gate’.
One day when her house is perched on a big hill, she sees a boy. A boy with blue eyes and a big smile. She sees he has a lamb in his hand. The boy asks how the house got there. Marinka tells him that it walked here, even though she knows he won’t believe her. He asks her if she can keep the lamb for one day because he still needs his father’s permission. Marinka agrees, but her house has seen her with the boy. What will happen next….
The genre of the book is fantasy because it has a house with chicken legs and dead people you can see. I really loved reading this heart-touching book because it showed the love between a grandmother and a girl. I would recommend this book to ages 11 and over because it might be hard for younger kids to understand. I really enjoyed reading this book and would rate it 10 out of 10.
