The Fall is a mystery novel by Tristan Banks that tells the story of 12-year-old Sam Garner, who witnesses a murder while he is staying with his father, a crime reporter, for the week while he recovers from an operation. But when Sam goes to tell his father that he saw a body fall from an upper apartment, his father is not there. What is more, Sam is seen by the murderer, so his life may be in danger. The plot moves quickly as Sam looks for clues and tries to solve the murder while on crutches with the help of a girl from next door, Scarlet.
This novel was very exciting, fast-paced, and easy to read. I would recommend it to high school age readers who enjoy mystery stories. A lot of issues relevant to teens were covered in this book such as injury, divorce, and fear. I really liked how the character of Sam is relatable to todayís twelve-year-olds. Iím sure that anyone in that situation would react just as Sam did at the start, and I think the character of Scarlet was also relatable, but Iím sure that not many people would be as brave as Sam and Scarlet were in a situation like that!
