Barney and the Secret of the French Spies is about a boy called Barney who lives in Australia and how he meets up with this gorgeous girl Elsie, who he had already met when he was a young boy. Barney gets sent a message, Elsie is quite ill, and she would love to see one of her good friends. Barney meets her and devotes most of his time to Elsie and tries to see if he could make her get better. But Elsie is hiding a massive secret, something big, something that could destroy the hometown of the love of her life, Barney. Why canít this girl speak English very well and what is her past? Why does she speak French when she is ill and who is she really?

The story is set during a time of conflict with war between Britain and Napoleon's France. There could be spies anywhere. Before she travelled the world, Elsie wanted to be a botanist and really wanted to travel the world to see new species of plants and then write it down in her journal, but the captain only accepted males on the ship.

I love this story because it is based on a true event and is very descriptive. It made me feel like I am actually in the book. This story is historical, romance. I would give this story a 5-star rating because I was able to picture images in my head as I read the story. I recommend this book for people 10 and up because the book contains some complex vocabulary which may be difficult for younger readers.
