The Dangerous Art of Blending In is a novel written by Angelo Surmelis that tells the story of a teen boy who faces obstacles in all the aspects of his life. It explores ideas and themes related to verbal, mental/emotional, and physical child abuse, bullying, LGBT+, relationships and religion. The main character’s turbulent relationship with his mother, combined with his difficult journey of coming out as a gay man, makes this book both incredibly difficult to read and incredibly delicate.

Taking these elements into consideration, I would recommend this for readers aged 15+ and only for people who are prepared to undertake the emotional roller coaster, this book takes one on. In saying this though, I do believe that a lot can be learnt from reading this book and it has a lot of offer the right person. Personally, I think I have gained an understanding of how it feels to experience these things and have definitely come out of it a better person.

Chelsea, age 16
