classes at the SomaChi studio

      ~Class Descriptions~

      SomaChi Yoga

This yoga is influenced by vinyasa, tai chi, dance and zapchen somatics.  It has been developed for people who like and want a challenge both physically and mentally.

The moves move quite rapidly, yet strives for graceful outcomes in the posture.  To see the results we suggest you do 3 classes at least a week for 1 month, and then you will be able to judge the results for yourself.  ‘actions speak louder than words’.
You can expect a stronger, leaner body, more flexibility and fitness, more enjoyment with your movement which is very important to help you keep motivated with your practice.

The aim of SomaChi is to build an internal heat to cleanse you physically and mentally, and to develop strength and flexibility simultaneously.  It is an ideal class for people who are used to and want a more dynamic style classes.

      SomaChi Circular Flow Yoga

This class helps develop flowing moves.  It is a breakdown class of practice to develop an in depth practice into the stronger classes.  More concentration in put into how we unwind into postures, a highly interesting and enjoyable class

      Vinyasa Yoga

These classes are more angular in shape to those of somachi, yet the class moves from one posture to the other.  The emphasis is placed on synchronizing breath and movement.  In our vinyasa classes we work with ‘restore the core’ we pay particular attention to bandha’s.  When we execute a bandha we lock certain areas of the torso in a particular way for heat, alignment, and abdominal work.

      Pilates Circuit

A combination class that uses props and equipment for those who prefer a class that is resistance based .
The circuit includes reformer beds, fit balls, foam rollers and wobble boards.  These are specialised classes designed for people who want to work with precision, alignment and concentration for correct execution of action in movement.

      Zapchen Meditation

One description of Zapchen is it is the Tibetan word for naughty. In our meditation we ask for perfection in non-perfection, as this state offers a readiness to start a meditative process. This process is simply observing our thoughts, habits and attitudes. This is not a meditation that aims for relaxation, it is a meditation for you to wake up and to strip back the layers to become less mechanical and more alive.

This aliveness is not about doing things correctly, its about being new with all your errors, mishaps and dismeanors. For here we have the ability to grow, it is here that we recognize our humanness to develop states of compassion and peace for ourselves and others.
