How does the Spinifex Separator Work?

Spinifex Oil Separator Schematic

The Spinifex oily water separator works on a very simple hydrocyclone principle. Oily water treatment is achieved by pumping the mixture tangentially into the oil water separator. This initiates a spinning vortex which is accelerated as the water is forced down the tapered section, separating the heavier water phase to the outside wall while the lighter oil phase moves to the center. The separated oil is removed through a reject orifice located in the inlet head and the treated water is discharged through the opposite end.

Why is it such a powerful Separator?

Unlike coalescing, plate pack or similar separators, the Spinifex oil/water separator relies on high centrifugal forces rather than weak gravity forces for separation. The centrifugal force generated inside the vortex of the Spinifex separator is in the order of 1,000 times the force of gravity. With such force oil water treatment with emulsified oil droplets is achieved.

How the Spinifex Oily Water Treatment Process Works

Spinifex oil water process diagram

This flow diagram below shows components typical to Spinifex modular oil separation systems.  You will notice that apart from the Spinifex Separator, our oily water treatment modules have many innovative features that enhance overall oil separation performance:

Floating Skimmer

  • Removes free floating oil every time system operates

  • Stagnant, smelly oil layers do not build up inside the pit

  • Allows dissolved oil to move from water to the atmosphere

  • Pit is 'flood-proof'.  If the pit should accidentally flood, any oil spillage will be minimized

Strainer

  • Protects separator and underflow from blockages

  • Typically 3 to 4mm opening

  • Protects Separator from blockages

Diaphragm Pump

  • Self-priming

  • Solids tolerant

  • Suitable for hazardous areas

  • Easy service

  • Low shear, does not emulsify oily water

  • Waste exhaust air suitable for water aeration for soluble oil content reduction.

Oil Collection Tank

  • Concentrates and collects oil

  • Easy low cost oil disposal;  via waste oil truck pump-out

  • Automatically drains excess water in separated oil back to the effluent pit

  • No oil spills and unsightly mess

  • Eliminates handling of heavy drums

Pneumatic Operation

  • Safe in hazardous areas, no expensive flame-proof electics

  • Easy to operate and maintain

  • Reduces installation costs

Recycle Feature (optional)

  • Enables very high system efficiencies via multiple passes

  • Enables system “tuning” to suit difficult situations by  increasing recycle time

  • System can be adjusted if future discharge regulations increase; by adjusting recycle time
