This site is dedicated to the Genealogical Research of the Family Špoljarević.
The origins of the name Špoljarević The Spoljarevic family tree can be traced back to a clan living in Gorskog Kotara, Croatia. One member of that clan, a Blacksmith working in the Frankopanskoj ironworks in the 14th century, was a master craftsman in the forging of weaponry (Sporni) and as such was awarded a knighthood for his skills. Thus beginning the name as “Šporer”. During the Turkish wars, in the 16th century the Šporer family was divided and settled in many regions throughout Croatia, and with these new settlements came variations to the Šporer name. The descendants settling in Zagreb remained as Šporer, those in Karantanija became Špoljar, those remaining in Gorskog Kotara became Špoljarić and those that settled in Slavonija became Špoljarević. In the 18th Century Martin Špoljarević from Brestace, had 2 sons Vuju and Ivan. The two brothers came to Kosutarica where they built their home and settled. From these 2 men a strong family line has descended which now has spread into at least 3 continents.
