David Rapport – Pioneer of Ecosystem Health

David Rapport, Canadian economist/ecologist, built on Aldo Leopold’s concept of land health to create the idea of Ecosystem Health. Although still an idea that challenges conventional minds, Rapport’s transdisciplinary view of the health of the total environment as having diagnostic similarities to health in a human body provides a comprehensive way of evaluating human impacts on ecosystems. As humans are part of ecosystems, human health is vitally dependent on Ecosystem Health.

In the 21^st century, Rapport’s ideas will become increasingly relevant in a world suffering from Rapport’s idea of Ecosystem Distress Syndrome. Glenn Albrecht’s idea of Solastalgia was in part an attempt to find the human psychological equivalent of Ecosystem Distress Syndrome.
