Nick headed the Discipline of Health Social Science at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the University of Newcastle, until his retirement in 2006. He is now a Conjoint Associate Professor.   He has extensive experience teaching post-graduate courses in Health Social Science, Transdisciplinary Health Research and Social Program Evaluation and Planning.  Areas of expertise include health psychology, transdisciplinary methodology, health survey design, rational use of medicine and international health.

PhD & Masters’ Students:  Over the past 5 years, Nick has supervised to completion 8 PhD and 2 Research Masters’ students investigating:

Prescribing patterns and quality of care for childhood diarrhoea in Thailand;
Trial of supervision in Directly Observed Treatment using Chemotherapy for tuberculosis in Thailand;
Social support of older Australians;
Development and validation of a predictive screening tool related to home safety and falls among the elderly;
Pain prevalence among rural nursing home residents; Development of a satisfaction questionnaire for primary prevention services among war veterans;
Public participation in health care decisions about medications;
Prescription cost and the use of medications.
