Albrecht, G.  (2005) “Solastalgia”. Conference on Environmental Health in the Hunter 2005, Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle, 19 May 2005.

Abstract: As the pace of industrial development accelerates, individuals and whole  communities often experience deep distress, in the face of large scale and rapid change,
at the loss of key elements in their environment that once provided them with comfort or solace.  This paper presents a new concept, ‘solastalgia’, to help explain the relationship between loss of ecosystem health and its relationship to human health; both mental and physical.  The concept was developed to explain the particular type of distress experienced by Upper Hunter residents living in communities heavily impacted by open cut coal mining, power station pollution and the infrastructure needed by both industries.

Albrecht, G.A. (June 5 2005) Solastalgia and the Tyranny of Big Decisions, Keynote Address at the Bournda Environmental Education Centre, for World Environment Day, Bega, Connor, L. (2005) “Methodological approaches to studying environmental change and human distress”. Innovations Workshop on Systemic environmental change and relationships to mental health, Australian National University, Canberra, 24th-25th November.

Abstract: This presentation gives a methodological overview of a long-term study of environmental change and human distress undertaken by an interdisciplinary team at the University of Newcastle. A qualitative interview study in 2003 found that the transformation of the environment from mining and power station activities was associated with expressions of distress linked to negative changes to residents' sense of place, well-being and control. A pilot multi-item scale with standardised response formats, titled "Environmental Distress Scale", was developed and implemented in 2004, to further explore the associations between environmental change and human distress through comparison of a highly affected and a relatively unaffected area of the Upper Hunter Valley. The group is now involved in a 3-year ARC-funded research project which has a multi-method design, including textual and documentary analysis,
ethnographic fieldwork, interviews and validation of the Environmental Distress Scale.

Connor. L. (2005) Health Impacts of Environmental Change and Industrial Development in the Upper Hunter: Residents’ Experiences. Conference on Environmental Health in the Hunter 2005, Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle, 19 May 2005.

Abstract: An interdisciplinary research team completed in-depth interviews with 60 community members and key informants (e.g., government officials) in two largely rural
LGAs where large scale industrial and open-cut mining development has been occurring
for more than a decade.  This paper will focus on a qualitative thematic analysis of health problems that were reported in interviews with residents of Upper Hunter communities.

Invited Paper presented at The International Forum for Social Sciences & Health (IFSS) World Congress: Health Challenges of the Third Millennium. Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey 21-26 August 2005.

Higginbotham, N. (2005)“Environmental Distress Scale (EDS): Pilot Validation in Singleton and Dungog”. Presented at the Conference on Environmental Health in the Hunter 2005, Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle, 19 May 2005.

Abstract: A new instrument, the Environmental Distress Scale (EDS) is being developed
to advance our understanding of the bio-psycho-social impact of environmental disturbance on the health of populations. The EDS measures a combination of hazard perceptions, bio-psycho-social impact, and response to hazard threat. This paper will present a pilot study to do a preliminary validation of the EDS, which involved a randomly selected community survey of 204 residents of Singleton and Dungog.
