Elizabeth Powell married Edward
Herbert Smith. The Smith
family departed Bristol on 11 October 1852 aboard the "TRY"
and arrived at Melbourne Port Phillip 12 January 1853.
Elizabeth Smith (nee Powell) had two brothers
Thomas and Jacob Yallowley and a sister Ruth who remained in England.
This link was established by a bequest under Thomas Powell's will
in which he left £1,298/18/1
to his niece Anna Grieves Townsend (nee Smith) a daughter of Elizabeth
Smith.  |

The earliest Powell is not known
but from the will of Ruth Powell it is believed that there were
at least two brothers Thomas Powell and James Powell. There may
have been more but no records have been found.
Thomas Powell married Ruth Yallowley
and had four children:
* Elizabeth (1806),
* Thomas (?-1878),
* Jacob Yallowley (1818-1878) and
* Ruth (1813-1883).
Ruth Yallowley was born on 02 October 1773 at Saint Lukes, Great
Mitchell Street Baptist, Finsbury, London, England. Her parents
were Jacob Yallowley and Mary .
James Powell married Phoebe and had five
children:
* Louisa (1822-1902) who married George
MacDonald
* George Holt (1824-1889) who married
Mary Reid
* Angela (1826-?) who married Arthur Morley
Francis
* Florentina (1830-?) and
* Caroline Chase (1832-?)
All children were christened at Old Gravel Pit Independent, Hackney,
London on 26 January 1836.
Louisa and George MacDonald had one son
- Greville Matheson.
George Holt and Mary Powell had seven
children:

Will of Ruth Powell |
The will
of Ruth Powell provided a significant list of relations who were
to receive bequests. In summary Ruth's will dated 11 May 1893
and proved 23 May 1895 indicated that she was of Netherwood in
the Parish of Ore in the County of Sussex Spinster and left bequests
to:
» Robert Leonard Powell (cousin - son of George
Holt Powell) of "Heatherbank" Chiselhurst in the County
of Kent and of London Bridge in the Borough of Southwark in the
County of Surrey Esquire. "Heatherbank" was previously
owned by Jacob Yallowley Powell and before that Thomas

An extract from Illustrated
London News indicated that the “will (dated Aug 16, 1875)
of Mr Jacob Yallowley Powell, late of Netherwood Manor Park, Streatham,
and of Lime-street, merchant, who died on May 12 last, was proved
on the 26th ult by Miss Ruth Powell, the sister, and George Holt
Powell, the surviving executors; the personal estate being sworn
under £160,000.” Ruth Powell received the majority of
the estate.
In the Bristol Mirror there was an article
“... Mr Jacob Yallowley Powell, merchant of Lime-street, London,
died last May. £20,000 he leaves to two nieces - one Mary
Ruth and the other Charlotte Elizabeth Oseler...”

marries Arthur Morley Francis and moves to Brisbane, Australia

Angela Powell (15 /12/1826 -
1902) daughter of James Powell and Phoebe was christened at Gravel
Pit Independent, Hackney, London, England. Angel was mentioned Ruth
Powell's will as her cousin.
Angela married Arthur Morley Francis (19/06/1827
- 1892) and they migrated to Brisbane, Queensland Australia aboard
the "Saldanha" on 28th January 1862. They took up about
70 acres near Corinda on the Brisbane River.
Arthur Francis had no farming experience,
but endeavoured to grow cotton. The family, including Richard and
Clement, lived in tents on the banks of the Brisbane River. The
baby died soon afterwards arriving. A further three children died
over the next nine years.
After the production of cotton proved unsuccessful
Arthur Francis first took in students, later became a Member of
Parliament, a newspaper editor and a magistrate. In the latter capacity,
Arthur Morley and family lived in various parts of Queensland including
Banana, Thargomindah, Barcaldine, Dalby and Southport.
Eventually not only Arthur Morley Francis
was buried in the cemetery but also five of their children, a daughter-in-law,
family friends and members of fellow pioneering families. The property
and the graves eventually became known as Francis Outlook Park,
Dewar Terrace Corinda, which overlooks the the Brisbane River.
Following Arthur's death, Angela returned
to live in England. In the 1880's where she studied midwifery in
London. Alexander and his second wife followed. On her return she
set up training courses for midwives to provide care to mothers
and children in country areas, also providing accommodation at Corinda
for young women arriving from England.
Richard the eldest surviving son is shown
on the 1881 Census for Cedar Lawn, London, Middlesex, England shows
a Richard Powell Francis as a nephew residing with George Holt Powell
and being an undergraduate of Oxford. Richard returned as a master
at Brisbane Grammar School. Richard died of pneumonia after working
tirelessly to rescue people caught up in the 1893 flood.
A Memorial Inscriptions Antechapel, North
Wall of Balliol College, Oxford University reads "Richard Powell
Francis d. 1893 - The first Australian student at Balliol, who by
his unselfishness and public spirit in the College, by his work
at the earliest settlement in East London, and afterwards as a Master
at Brisbane Grammar School, was an influence for good on many. He
was born in 1860, matriculated 1879, and died in 1893, giving his
life to help others in the Great Flood at Brisbane."
Alexander studied medicine and set up practice
as an ear, nose and throat specialist in Wickham Terrace, but also
served as local doctor in the Sherwood - Corinda area. Later he
practiced in Barcaldine, Rockhampton and Ipswich. The first wife
of Alexander had also died of tuberculosis in 1892.
Richard Powell married Mary Waugh and they
had a son Richard Powell Waugh Francis (16/04/1893). Whilst at Brisbane
Grammar School he was a Cadets including 1½ years as Lieutenant
on probation He was awarded a Bachelor of Medicine, Sydney 1916
and at the time of enlistment with a rank of Captain he was Resident
Medical Officer at Lady Lau..mpton Hospital, Brisbane. In November
1924 he is recorded at "Craignish" 4th Floor 185 Macquarie
Street, Sydney, New South Wales.
