Grave
at St Mary's Croscombe
The
grave of Stephen Townsend, his son James and daughter-in-law
Ann (nee Wason) at St Mary's Churchyard Croscombe, Somerset
(Croscombe is between Shepton Mallet and Wells).
The inscription reads
In Memory of Stephen Townsend alias Townshend Formerly of
Chilcot Yeoman who died Decm 18th 1823 Aged 96 years
James son of Stephen Townsend who died Jan 9th 1836 Aged 73
years and of Ann his wife who died Nov 25th 1847 Aged 81 years.
This is the last positive link in the Townsend chain. Other
information is based upon records obtained from Taunton and
the fact that Stephen was formerly of Chilcot which could
be interpreted as Horrington.

John Robert
Townsend a great grandson of Stephen Townsend purchased Rudgeway
House on 9 June 1870 by auction at the White Lion Hotel, Broad
Street Bristol. It was later auctioned for £4,500 on
28th September, 1876 in sale room 4 of Messrs H R Fargus &
Co, Clare St, Bristol on Thursday..
This view shows the new kitchens built by J R Townsend. The
green houses and orchards were to the left of the drive.

at Melbourne aged 42 years and 11 months and embarked from
Australia 4/5/1916 for Suez.

Hicks Townsend
[10 October 1791 Croscombe - 4 April 1867 Bristol]
William Hicks Townsend's was a son of Stephen Townsend of
Croscombe and Chilcote, brother of James Townsend and Uncle
of John Robert Townsend. He was variously listed as a Land
& Timber Surveyor, General Agent & Engineering Surveyor
with business located at 1 Shannon Crt, Corn St Bristol between
1822-1868. Residences were 3 Montague Pce [1842], 13 St James
Pde Kingsdown [1845] and "Strontium House" Cotham Side near
St Mathew's Church [1852].
William Hicks Townsend left many charitable bequests; including
several that related to his birthplace. "
To the
Rector and Churchwardens of the Parish of Croscombe in the
County of Somerset the sum of One thousand pounds Sterling
to be by them invested and the Income thereof to be applied
annually during the winter months at their discretion from
time to time in Coals and Clothing for the benefit of such
deserving poor persons resident in that parish as they shall
select, To the Trustees of the Church of England Schools at
Croscombe aforesaid the sum of One Thousand pounds Sterling
to be by them invested and the income thereof to be applied
towards the payment of the current expenses of the maintenance
of such schools, To the Trustees of the same schools at Croscombe
aforesaid the sum of Five hundred pounds sterling towards
the cost of enlarging the present School buildings or otherwise
for providing proper and commodious Schools equal to the requirements
of the Parish
".
