Animal News
I'm truly amazed, after reading the following item which appeared in The Sunday Telegraph, (27/08/00), that I am able to sit here and write this piece.
Q. Can you catch rabies from simply patting an unknown dog?
From Dr. Wright:
A. In Australia, the answer is no. Fortunately, strigent quarantine laws mean we are still a rabies-free country. When overseas, do not pat animals, especially any which seem friendly and calm - this is often a symptom of
rabies.......
I don't know about you, but that sounds awfully like the sort of animals I would pet, however, in future, I shall know better. I shall carefully pick out the Rover that is baring its teeth and staring, and perhaps has a little froth around its mouth, the Fluffy that is growling, has its ears down flat and tail fluffed up. I'm so greateful for this advice, and I must say how much I admire the persistence of animal lovers in the rabid-ridden world who have to put up with snarling, grouchy pets just to be safe.
