jumping hills

jumping hills on a natural hillsideSki jumping is conducted on jumping hills constructed to FIS specifications and local ski association regulations.

They range in size from 15m to 140m for ski jumping, and up to 200m for ski flying. The photograph at right shows four jumping hills ranging in size from 15m to 60m.

Jumping hills combine the natural hills with wooden or metal structures covered with a permanent plastic layer over a foam base, as shown in the following photographs.

The photographs above show the laying of the synthetic covering along the full length of the ski jump. A foam base is first layed over the solid framework of the jump and then covered with a plastic layer as seen in the photograph below.
