| The Value of Community* | |
| No one comes into this world alone. From the moment you are born, you are part of a community. Your mother, father, relatives and their friends, neighbours and acquaintances are all part of your community. In a broader sense, the whole world is your community; both the people in it and the earth itself. In the personal sense, community refers to the people that you interact with and the spaces and places in your very own part of the world. As one of a whole, it is a mistake to think only of yourself at the expense of the community. You owe your community, at the very least, a commitment to do no harm to yourself, others or the earth. | |
| *This verse is a dedication to Gary B, age 19. The
verse came to me in a sudden flash three days after he committed
suicide. Gary will be sadly missed by all of us that were part of his
community.
