About Us
Womenspace began in early 1997 with a small group of women who wondered, "Why do we feel as if there's something missing for women in Brisbane? What if there was a place for women to share their stories? Wouldn't it be great if we could create a space just for women? I wonder if there are other women who would be interested?"

Slowly their thoughts emerged. They continued to meet and to dream of what might be.

In September 1997 this small group held a public meeting to see if there were any other women in Brisbane who shared a similar dream. They called it a "Women's Space meeting". They found that there were eighty other women dreaming the same dream!!!

Out of that meeting a formal Coordinating Committee was formed, which continued to meet monthly to further the dream. When the organisation was incorporated, the only name possible was that which had been used for so long, and so it became officially Women's Space Association Inc. or Womenspace.

Within weeks of the public meeting came an incredible, exciting, wonderful offer from a group of women to buy and renovate a place for the "Women's Space". The search was on for a place that met the requirements of the City Council, was easily accessible, and fulfilled the women's dream.

With the help of a wonderful woman real estate agent, finally the ideal Womenspace emerged. In August 1999 the Committee took possession of a fascinating old bakery and shop at 12-14 Homebush Road, Kedron.

Then began the consultations with architects, builders, access experts and a wide range of women, to ensure that the buildings are not only beautiful, but maintain the sense of earthiness and sacredness which is the essence of Womenspace.

Womenspace was officially opened
in November 2000.
