An 'up-lifting', easy to read, first-person account of the breast cancer experience in Australia - highly recommended.

One in 11 women in Australia is diagnosed with breast cancer each year - nearly 10 per cent of the female population - and only five-to-seven per cent from hereditary causes.

"But," says Barbara Joss author of new book My Left Breast, "This is only part of the story. The world's best kept secret is the good news about treatment advances and the fact that there is a wonderful life after breast cancer".

When she was diagnosed, Barbara thought her life was over. Here she recounts her turbulent and often hilarious journey and how her life was transformed by the experience.

This inspirational book is not only 'a great read', but also fills a much needed gap in public awareness of breast cancer.

Explaining 'how to deal with breast cancer emerging enriched', it includes: tips such as, How Friends and Family Can Help, How To Be With It Without It; a special chapter: For Men; plus 'expert opinions' by top Australian breast cancer specialists on treatment options at different stages of the disease.

The special chapter, 'For Men', is a summary of an audiotape by the National Breast Cancer Centre, with men explaining problems they faced when their partners got breast cancer and solutions that helped.

Barbara also traces her show-biz career: starting as a child in London's West End, her teen years in films and television - rubbing shoulders with such greats as Marilyn Monroe, Alec Guinness and Shirley Bassey - and later in Australia.

Barbara, a multi award winning public relations consultant, is the woman in the controversial TV advertisement showing the results of mastectomy, screened during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 1998.
