Lymphoedema Association of Australia
www.lymphoedema.org.au
This is probably one of the plainest websites on the WWW! It's also one of the most valuable! It's packed with high-quality information made freely available about the troublesome problem many cancer survivors have with lymphoedema.
Secondary Lymphoedema is the swelling of a limb due to the removal of lymphatic (often abbreviated to "lymph") nodes. Removal of the lymph nodes is a common form of surgery performed on cancer patients in order to assess whether the cancer has spread to the lymph system as the lymph system is one way that cancers can travel around the body to establish new tumours.
The lymphatic system piggy-backs the circulatory system and is responsible for clearing up the waste products generated by the immune system when repairing tissue. When the lymph nodes (for example, in the armpit for breast cancer or the groin for genital cancers) have been removed, the fluid and waste products can't be extracted from the limb and the limb swells. If not effectively treated, the swollen limb becomes extremely painful. Untreated lymphoedema leads to disablement and chronic pain in the affected limb.
The good news is that highly effective treatment is now available in Australia, although, unfortunately, at a price. Dr Judith Casley-Smith, formerly of Adelaide University, is the researcher responsible for making the treatment available in Australia and training many therapists around Australia in the method. A list of therapists (with location and phone number) trained in the method is available on Dr Casley-Smith's site.
This site is absolutely essential reading for any cancer survivors affected by lymphoedema.
