27 I'm writing to ask if any people you know have had any dealings with the A P John Institute for Cancer Research, in Connecticut. On their website, (www.apjohncancerinstitute.org) they give information about "CAAT" therapy, that involves the use of / deprivation of certain enzymes from the diet to fight cancer. I am considering buying some of their enzyme forumla to asssist in the treatment of my mother's metastatic bowel cancer, and I am trying to decide whether it is legitimate or just a rip-off. [Does anyone know anything about] the A P John Institute, and whether you have heard of such enzyme therapy, whether it's considered useful, etc, or if you can put me onto anyone else who can provide such information. Of course, if there is any place in Australia that provides such treatment, I'd like to hear about that, too. Thank you for your assistance,

26 My friend Liz has been battling lung cancer for a year now. She is 32 and has never smoked. She finished chemo before Christmas and had a brilliant check-up in April -- no recurrence in the lungs. However, they have just discovered secondary tumors in her brain. Her mainstream doctors say terminal, but she is not giving up. What do you you suggest?? Email:

25 Hi, my name is Howard. I’m not sure I’m emailing the right place but I’m trying anyway. I have a friend who has cancer and has undergone operations and chemo and basically been through hell. At the moment he is very depressed as he has had to struggle enormously to stay alive. I know there has to be some way to help him work through his grief, develop a program to get him motivated. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks, Email:

24 I finished radiation treatment for cervical/vaginal cancer 9 months ago. I am finding it so hard to cope with all the 'head' stuff that is happening right now. It is very hard to find any support for after treatment. My prognosis is great. Would like to talk to others who have same problem. Thanks, Email:

21 My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2001. She was severely jaundiced and lost a large amount of weight. The surgeons were able to operate and did a procedure known as the whipple. Medically, she is doing well - cancer count continues to go down. I would like to know if anyone reading this site, and who has pancreatic cancer or a family member who has this cancer, has experienced severe depression and whether or not an anti-depressant is a viable option. My mother is severely depressed and will not eat, get out of bed and talks constantly of dying even after receiving good news of further cancer count depletion. I look forward to an answer.

19 In December 1997, I had a Stage IV melanoma removed from my upper left arm. In September 2001, I had a lump removed from under the same arm, which proved to be malignant. A CT scan showed that I had advanced melanoma which had spread to my lungs and my liver. There are four small lumps in my lungs, the largest being 10 mm, and 5 in my liver, all under 10 mm. I have made some drastic changes to my lifestyle as regards diet and attitude and have decided to participate in a clinical trial being held in Brisbane to develop a vaccine which can be reinjected to stimulate the immune system. I am a teacher but have not yet returned to work. After my surgery to remove some cancerous cells to develop this vaccine I hope to resume teaching. I don't have a partner, as I have been separated for three years. Sadly, some of my closest friends cannot seem to cope with the news and tend to treat me as either something wrapped in cotton wool or someone for which there is no hope. Both of these, in my view, are not helpful and so I feel my strongest support group will be made up of those who do not have an emotional attachment to me. I am happy to share my information with others - once an educationalist, always an educationalist! Email:

18 I have just received news that my father has pancreatic cancer. He has lost almost 25 kilograms and has had the bypass surgery. Can anyone help me prepare for what is to happen from here? What should I expect in the next few months? For the moment he is too weak and underweight to go through any of the other treatments. Email:

17 Does anyone know of someone with advanced Pancreatic Cancer who has been cured?? Can anyone tell me a bit about the course of this disease? My father, 71, has Pancreatic Cancer that has spread to the liver and spine. He has not shown the classic symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, being jaundiced and having severe weight loss. Also, X-rays have not shown a tumour in the pancreas (or bowel either). However the cancer in the liver has a 'high count' of hormones with cells from the pancreas and also from the bowel. They are calling it Pancreatic Cancer. (His father died of Pancreatuic cancer at age 63.) It is inoperable so the doctors are saying it will be chemotherapy but this will be only to 'control' the disease. I am looking for a treatment with brighter prospects which has case histories of remission of advanced pancreatic cancer and which has at least some scientific support. Is this being too hopeful? 14 Hi, My mother who is 75 was diagonised last November with secondary liver cancer and it has come from the uterus. She had 5 lots of chemo and went really well with them, but it did not stop the cancer and now she is having 4.5 to 6 litres of fluid taken every 6 days. She gets so weak and tired and her feet are constantly swollen. I asked the specialist last week what he thought she would be like for my daughter's wedding in November this year and he told me that she would not be here then. I want to know what to expect I have been told that the fluid build-up will continue and will have to be done more often. The specialist also wants to start looking at pallative care at either Westmead or St. Joseph's hospital at Auburn (Sydney). I really would like mum to come and stay with me for as long as possible, but she refuses and wants to stay at home. Can I find out what to expect? Will she be in pain? She is in discomfort when the fluid builds up and she finds she gets really puffed out quickly and then she also has trouble talking. She also gets out of breath talking. I really want to know what mum is in for, With regards, Email:
Pat

12 I would like to contact others who have been treated for liver cancer (Dukes D Colon Cancer) metastases from the colon and who have are being treated by chemotherapy through a hepatic artery port. I was diagnosed on the 19 May 2000 and was operated on in June that year. I had an operation that removed a portion of the colon aswell as the gall bladder. A port was placed into the hepatic artery. I receive chemotherapy every fortnight being connected to a computerised pump from Monday to Friday from this port. I was informed at the time that the average life expectancy was 2 years but the surgeon said he had patients still alive after 5 years. All the signs have been good and there has been some continuing reduction in the size of the liver tumors (about 20). It is not a cure but is seems to be good at controlling the deteriation of the liver. Love to hear from you. Regards John Email:

10 A book with the title above was published in 1989 and I am currently in the process of updating it for re-publication in 2002. Facing Cancer explored a number of alternative and complementary cancer therapies, and recorded the stories of people who had gained control of their cancer through them. It also looked at the attitudes of orthodox medical practioners to alternative treatments and therapists. If you have a personal success story of alternative treatment I would love to hear from you. If your story was included in the original book I would be delighted to update it in the new edition.

9 Wonderful professor specialising in latest techniques. My husband at 60 years of age was diagnosed May 2000 in Sydney. Prognosis: 6 - 18 months. Advanced liver metastases now treated with hepatic portal chemotherapy. No side effects except for tiredness. Every 3 months has scans and the latest revealed that the tumours, of which he had 20+, seem to be reducing in size. You will find Professor Morris at St George Hospital in Sydney. Email:

8 My father has recently undergone bowel surgery, at which time the surgeon discovered there were also cancer spots on the liver - November 2000. He has recovered terribly slowly after the operation, in and out of hospital, blood pressure dropping so low he couldn't stand let alone walk. He has lost a lot of weight, and a month ago was beginning to put a little back on, and walk without assistance for some distance. My father has however taken a turn backwards again now, and is coughing up loads of clear fluid - the specialists seem unaware of where this is coming from or how they can get rid of it. There was talk of him undergoing chemotherapy, but apparently he is too ill for this. What can we do? Are there any doctors you know who specialize in this area? My Father is 72 and before his operation was working as a volunteer, and very active, but he is fading before our eyes. Thank you. Email:

7 I would like to contact anyone who has had a life-long partner who has survived cancer but still feels very vulnerable. There seems to be so little support for family members who are often confused and unsure of how to live and support their loved one in this situation...even with the help of Gawler and the diet and meditation. Please contact me...maybe we can share some insights which will help us cope and keep us sane! Email:

5 I was hoping that someone would be able to help me to point my husband in the right direction. His father has been diagnosed with cancer of the prostate and unfortunately it has spread to his lungs. His step mother is the only one communicating to him about it at the moment as his father won't talk to him about it as he is too distressed. She has told him though the it is a 10 out of 10 rating which he feels must be the worst kind. As his father doesn't want to tell him anything else, he feels helpless with what he can do. We live in Hobart and his father lives in Canberra so it is difficult to just pop over to the house and and a chat. What can my husband do to help...or what can I do to help my husband? He is very stressed. Thank
