Cancer Programs

Straight after diagnosis my GP gave me a book by Penny Brohn, one of the founders of the Bristol Cancer Help Centre. After reading the book I contacted the Cancer Help Centre about going there and plans for the trip were underway when I found that a number of excellent programs along similar lines operate in Australia. I investigated the Australian options and have since participated in two of these. - Ed.

Through an enquiry to the NSW Cancer Council I found out about Gerry and Helen-Anne Manion. Gerry is a Counsellor and Helen-Anne is a Medical Oncologist and for many years they ran a programme called "Cancer Care Programme".

In Autumn 1995, my family and I stayed in a little cottage overlooking the beach for a week and we walked up to the Manion’s house for a morning and afternoon session each day.

We found this a tremendous help. The list of books I’ve included in this site mostly came from a reading list that Gerry gave me. The Manions have an enormous wealth of wisdom and experience which they generously shared with us, to our benefit.

Gerry and Helen-Anne have recently established a new programme which has evolved out of their previous work. It's called Home Hospice and assists cancer patients and their families who believe that the right place for them to be during their final days is at home.
