Patrick and Anne Staunton

Patrick Staunton was born in Ireland ca 1827 and died Adelaide S.A. 9th Aug 1904 aged 77years and is buried in The West Tce Cemetery with his wife Anne.
Anne Staunton (nee O'Keeffe) was born in Ireland ca 1830 and died Adelaide 25th April 1899 aged 69 years.

Patrick and Anne were selected from County Limerick for Immigration and they departed Liverpool on the sailing ship "Northern Light" (1855/10 passenger list) and arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia 8th April 1855.

On the voyage their first child a daughter Mary, was born on 1st March 1855.

The ships passenger list shows Patrick to be a ploughman or agricultural labourer.

Eight months after arriving in the colony Patrick was living on Port Road Woodville and working as a labourer. He was involved in some work related accident that resulted in an injury to his hand that prevented him from working and he was forced to seek help from the Destitute Persons Board (GRG 28/4 no.115 date 12/2/1856).

Later they were living at Ridge Park Glen Osmond and Patrick was working as a gardener on the property. In about 1896 Archbishop O'Reilly purchased the property for his residence. About 50 years later the property became a covent for Carmelite nuns and it remains so to this day.

There is a street in Fullarton named after Patrick Staunton.

Sister Genevieve wrote an article title "Memories that quicken" and it was published in The Garland of St Joseph, in either August or September 1962. It was about Patrick and Annes voyage to Australia but I have been unable to locate this magazine. If anyone has a copy or knows where I may obtain a copy, please contact me.
