RUN OVER BY TRAIN

FATALITY AT THE PORT

A painful accident occurred at Port Adelaide on Tuesday afternoon, when Frederick Baggs, a shunter, was run over by a train in the railway goods yards. The unfortunate man had been waiting as an attendant upon a heavily laden goods train, which had just arrived from the north. As the train was about to come to a stand still, Baggs ran in front of the engine in order to reverse the points. While crossing the line he tripped and fell with both legs across the line in front of the advancing engine. Before he could clear himself the engine came upon him and passing over his legs caused fearful injuries. His companions immediately sent for assistance, and Dr. Toll coming on the scene shortly afterwards ordered the removal of the sufferer to the Port Hospital, where after lingering for a few hours he succumbed to the effects of his injuries. The deceased was about 30 years of age. He had only been married about 12 months, and was a favorite in the railway yard. A report of the occurrence will be laid before the Coroner this morning.
