Hartley TS16 "Enigma" in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, California, USA
The story of "Enigma" from owner Peter Gonzales -
The builder was Robb Roberts. It was built in 1980, in salt lake city. For its maiden voyage it was sailed in the Great Salt Lake, in Utah. That day a storm came down the canyons and winds were blowing at 40 knots for a six hour period. Although they had the mast too far back they managed the boat with out any incidents.
After the Maiden voyage the mast was moved forward to allow better tacking, and was sailed for many years in the Great Salt Lake.
Orignally build the boat for practice. He really wanted to build a world cruising boat (40+ Feet). What he learned by building the Enigma was the bigger boat would take 10 times longer and 50% more money than planned. He ended up buying his next boat. The name came from the question which he kept asking himself "Why did I build it?"
Three years ago Robb gave Enigma to a sailing buddy, Peter Gonzalez. Peter took the boat and refurbished it. It took two years of the boat sitting in Peter's front yard before re-launching. It is now being sailed out of Marina Del Rey, California.
Many people when seeing the boat ask who made it. We do not have many Hartleys in Southern California (other than the Enigma I do not know of any). The comment most stated is "It is cute."
Like many toys the boat is over loaded with toys. It has a Garmin 162 gps, Nav radio, Compass, and a 6hrs nissan outboard.
The people in the boat are: Peter and Kathy Gonzalez, Dave and Lenore Bowman.
